Chapter 19

Gavin

“Yeah, that’s right,” I say over the phone. I’m speaking to my contract manager of the hotel project for the sanctuary grounds. “I’ll try and get over there shortly. We can go through it in person then.”

As I’m talking, my office door opens, and in walks a familiar face, my good friend Tyler.

“Okay, speak later,” I encourage the call to end, indicating with my hand for Tyler to come in and take a seat. “Bye.”

Tyler’s dressed in his whites, so it’s clear that he’s working.

“Well, well, it’s not often I get a visit from the star himself,” I say, grinning. “When you doing that TV show?”

“Not until next week, but that’s partly why I’m here,” Tyler tells me with a worried look on his face.

“What’s up, bro?” I ask him with the fondness of brotherhood, even though we’re only lifelong friends. Leaning back in my office chair I raise my eyebrows, “Your problems are mine, care to share them?”

“I do,” Tyler replies. He brushes his hand through his spiked, blond hair, a hairstyle unique to him for his TV appearances. “I’m here about Josey.”

“Ahh...I can’t help you there,” I say, getting up from my chair and inadvertently pacing the office floor.

“Not sure what you mean? Are you, or are you not the hotel owner?” Tyler asks me with a look of confusion.

“Wouldn’t it be better if the hotel manager dealt with staff matters?” I suggest.

“I thought you might like to know that I’m here because I’m worried about her strange behavior,” Tyler adds.

“Why, what’s she done now?”

“As you know, she had some time off to let things cool down with the kitchen gossipers,” Tyler begins. “I thought it’d worked out well because she came back all refreshed, and I must say even looking happy. Then, she disappears out of my kitchen, rings in sick, and hasn’t been back since.”

“This isn’t my concern, Tyler,” I stress to him. “All I know is that ex-boyfriend’s turned up and they seem to be back together again.”

“You mean that she’s lying about being sick?”

“I’ve got no idea; how should I know?” I say, indignantly.

“Come on, Gavin, you two had something going on; you can’t deny that,” Tyler accuses me.

“Well, if we did, we don’t anymore.”

“I’ve been to her room in the hotel,” Tyler continues. “She isn’t there and hasn’t been seen there by anyone.”

“She’s most likely doing what all lovers do, Tyler, but not with me, I assure you,” I hint, starting to feel a bit annoyed.

It’s not that I’m mad at Tyler; it’s more that I’m pissed off with Josey for what’s she’s done to me. Not one word since I saw them together, not even a fucking text.

“If that’s true, then I’m going to have to fire her. Like I said, I’m away next week and I need my team to be functional. Josey’s becoming a bit of a liability,” he admits.

“I’d give her some sort of warning first,” I suggest though I have no idea why. Well, I do because legally we have to, but I don’t want her fired.
